Coppin Legal is a modern law practice incorporating the legal services of its principal, Ben Coppin.
We strive to deliver legal support services, in the nature of a freelance general counsel, at a price and in a manner that adds value to our clients’ businesses.

Our Approach
Supporting the SME sector to grow their Business in W.A.
We seek to accept and adopt new technology in our delivery of services, to keep overhead costs down, whilst enabling us to deliver services which are more malleable and responsive to our client’s needs.
This approach enables us to keep our practice nimble and price competitive, when viewed alongside our more traditionally minded colleagues.
We are particularly interested in supporting the small to medium business sector of Western Australia to grow and develop their businesses in an increasingly complex legal and regulatory environment.

Our Expertise
Insurance and Contracting Specialists
We have experience across a variety of sectors; and have acted for both principals and contactors (at all levels) in the transport and logistics, electrical, facilities management and hospitality industries.
What we do:
• Contract reviews
• Contractual disputes
• Commercial drafting
• Insurance law
• Litigation
• Negotiation and advisory services in relation to such matters
We do not practice in Criminal or Family, Industrial Relations or Labour, Mergers & Acquisitions or Property Law, nor are we suited to handle matters requiring large firm resources. However, if your immediate needs are not within our scope of practice or capacity, we will do our best to draw upon Ben’s network and experience and recommend you to a suitable practitioner who can assist you.

Get in Touch
While we love technology, we have found web forms and generic enquiry emails to be too robotic and impersonal (not to mention their lack of responsiveness), Ben prefers to speak with each of our enquirers in person. So please call (or even text) him with your enquiry, and he will get back to you without delay.

Ben Coppin – Coppin Legal
Ben holds a BA Laws & BA Arts (Hons) from the University of Notre Dame in Fremantle, having graduated in July 2007.
Ben started his career as an article clerk to the general counsel of a multinational food services company which specialised in the delivery of catering, food and facilities management services under contract to various industries, including the mining, education and defence sectors in Australia and New Zealand. The role exposed Ben to the broad range of issues and interests which are handled day-to-day by the in-house legal department of a large corporation.
As a competitive tenderer, despite the company’s size and corporate resources, its capacity to negotiate contract terms was often limited to critical liability and insurance provisions, which needed to align with the company’s insurance arrangements to ensure that the risk allocation and loss scenarios were both commercial and sensible for both parties.
To gain a better understanding of such issues in practice Ben undertook the second half of his articles of clerkship under the managing partner of a leading West Australian insurance litigation practice, a role which he continued after his admission as a solicitor (December 2008) and ultimately, to the level of Special Counsel.
More than 10 years later Ben had developed a successful private practice as an insurance litigator, specialising in commercial insurance contracts (property, personal accident, liability and motor vehicle), disputes (particularly defendant-side insurer v insurer, contractual indemnity, workers’ compensation recovery and personal injury claims) and recoveries (with a particular focus on heavy motor vehicles) for several major Western Australian and national insurers.
While an insurance specialist, Ben also practised in the areas of liquor licensing (having obtained liquor licenses for several large permanent mining camp facilities), contract negotiations, reviews and commercial drafting.
Ben has appeared as counsel in the Magistrate’s, District and Supreme Courts of Western Australia, including the Court of Appeal, as well as the Federal Magistrate’s (now Federal Circuit) Court and Federal Court Chambers.
Throughout this time Ben maintained his relationship with his initial employer through the provision of legal services under secondment and, as its relationship manager, responsible for the coordination of broader legal support services from among his colleagues within a national diversified law firm environment (he was the only non-partner to do so).
Outside of the law, Ben is also an experienced executor and company director, having held a variety of external roles, including as a director and later chairman of Hermal Pty Ltd from 9 October 2006 through 2 June 2023, a family-run business which employs in-excess of 400 staff each year to work in its seasonal hotel and nightclub operations in the town of Broome.
Ben founded Coppin Legal in 2022 with the aim of employing his experience and skill set for the benefit of the SME market, to move away from the big firm and big corporate clients he had been working with previously and, in the hope of striking some work/life balance.
